Additional programs include workplace development to provide literacy activities for employees of a particular workplace or to prepare adults work in career advance; College preparation workshops; and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes. The Pellissippi State Adult Ed program also provides services at the main campus as well as other locations (i.e. churches, community agencies) around the city.

Empowerment Zone (EZ) Training

This program is ending May 1, 2007.
  • Special training opportunities are available to residents of the “Empowerment Zone” including financial assistance to gain or enhance their career/job skills. The first step towards eligibility is verifying your EZ residency. Please read the specific policies and procedures of the EZ Scholarship Program and then contact the Heart of Knoxville Career Center to get started!

Contracts for Training Program is another opportunity for customers to gain skills and abilities as well as provides resources to organizations who are committed to help “empower” individuals with needed knowledge, skills, and abilities. The Heart of Knoxville Career and Resource Center solicits proposals from businesses, community-based and grassroots organizations to provide specialized training to eligible residents of Knoxville’s Empowerment Zone. Example of past awardees include East Tennessee Mechanical Contractors’ S.T.A.K.E. program which trains EZ residents in mostly carpentry skills but also other areas of the building trades; Sheet Metal Workers’ Pre-apprenticeship program which prepares EZ residents for actual apprenticeship opportunities and the Center School project, which works especially hard with EZ residents to earn a high school diploma.
